A practical guide to relocating to Spain from UK
Those who wish to move to Spain from the United Kingdom should know that, after Brexit, things have changed. For example, you now need to obtain a series of documents that require good planning. At Azahar Properties, we explain the requirements and how to obtain them.
Practical Guide to Moving to Spain from the United Kingdom
The Valencian Community is an especially attractive destination for UK citizens. Its more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the large community of expats already living here, and the lower cost of living compared to the UK are all compelling reasons that appeal to all kinds of people. Whether you are a retiree looking for peace and quiet or a remote worker searching for a different environment that improves your quality of life, the region of Valencia is your best option.
Requirements for British Citizens Who Want to Live in Spain
British citizens who wish to move to Spain need a residence permit or visa, as they are now considered non-EU citizens after Brexit. This document is mandatory for anyone planning to stay in Spain for more than 90 days within a 180-day period.
The type of visa required depends on the purpose of the stay. The most common are the Non-Lucrative Visa (particularly attractive for retirees) and the Digital Nomad Visa (used by remote workers).
Before Moving to Spain
In addition to the visa, UK citizens must meet the following entry requirements:
- A passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country. The passport must also have been issued within the last 10 years.
- Proof of sufficient financial means to support themselves in Spain. Bank statements, proof of pension income, etc., are acceptable.
- Private health insurance, covering all medical expenses in Spain. This requirement disappears once the citizen gains access to the public healthcare system.
- Criminal record certificate, showing that the applicant has not committed any offences. This document must be apostilled, meaning it carries an official government seal certifying the authenticity of the signature and the authority of the signatory. This avoids additional paperwork in Spain and speeds up the process.
- Apostilled and translated birth certificate.
- Apostilled and translated marriage certificate, if applicable.

After Arriving in Spain
The paperwork does not end upon arrival. You must complete additional procedures to formalize your stay. The most important are:
- Apply for the NIE (Foreigner Identity Number). This is a unique identification number assigned to each foreign resident in Spain. It is required for legal and administrative tasks such as opening a bank account or buying a property. It can be obtained at the Spanish consulate or upon arrival.
- Apply for the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card). This physical residence card contains your photo and personal details. It certifies your legal residence in Spain for stays longer than six months.
- Register with the local town hall (Empadronamiento). This proves your residence and grants access to public services such as healthcare. British retirees may access public healthcare through the S1 form.
- Open a Spanish bank account, necessary for managing daily transactions.
- Fulfil tax obligations, including income-related obligations applicable in Spain.
